Umtamvuna Views: Port Edward mourns André
He was caretaker at Port Edward Methodist Church for eighteen years.
ANDRÉ van Zyl (72) died peacefully in his sleep last Wednesday night (14th). He was caretaker at Port Edward Methodist Church for 18 years and was always kind and helpful. He endeared himself to the church family and was always available to open up the hall, sell vegetables from the community garden and generally supervise the upkeep of the hall and surrounds. André was a passionate animal lover and the four feral cats who adopted him over the years will continue to be cared for under the church umbrella. His memorial service will be held tomorrow (Thursday) at 2pm.

The community has been abuzz with the sudden and unexpected closure of both the Port Edward Medi Clinic, as well as the 19th Hole Pub and Grill. Both businesses were owned and run by Sister Sue Lamb, who lived and practiced in the area for nearly 30 years and built up a solid relationship with her patients. It is reported that she has relocated to Port Elizabeth, but sadly has left staff, friends and patients in the dark.
Plan ahead
The school holidays are almost upon us and residents and property owners are reminded that during the season there will be restricted entry to the main beach at Port Edward.
Beach permits (for free entry) will be available from the Tourism Office at Mac Banana Estate.

Hosting visitors
The Munster Bowling Club hosted a group of 20 elderly Gauteng visitors last weekend. Cliff Moakes and Phil Longden demonstrated the basics of bowling and the group of 18 women and two men had a great time getting to grips with the game. They stayed at The Merry Crab Beach Lodge in Munster and had a wonderful time exploring the area – they visited Beaver Creek Coffee farm, the Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort and went on a day excursion to visit the delights of Durban. This community group holds an annual holiday excursion, alternating between Cape Town and KZN. Well done to the club for extending a hand of friendship to visitors.
