As beachgoers began to head home after a long sweltering day on Tuesday this week, the work was just beginning for some.

Dozens of RNM vehicles and cleaners – some bolstered by volunteers from various communities – were deployed to ensure the streets, beaches and popular party spots were once again spick and span.

Mlungisi Chiliza from Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and Umtentweni resident Petra Rickson work together to clean up Umtentweni beach on Wednesday this week.

The Herald visited Umtentweni on Wednesday morning this week and spoke to Mike Davies, one of the many residents hard at work cleaning up the beach.

Mr Davies said revellers had left behind ‘tons’ of garbage including food packaging and beer bottles.

Umtentweni resident Mike Davies packs the boot of his vehicle with rubbish collected from the beach.

He added it was great to see so many people coming together and taking pride in their communities, bringing a positive start to the new year.
