Why does the sun have a halo?

If you look to the sky above you will witness this event for yourself.

What’s up with the sun and the halo around it? The end is nigh! Or it’s the end of days – these are just some of the theories doing the rounds on the phenomenon taking place in our skies.

Believe it or not a halo around the sun or to be more precise a 22° HALO is a fairly common optical event.

According to Wikipedia, it is typically caused when there are very high, very thin clouds. These clouds, being so high in the sky, are made from ice crystals. The crystals reflect and refract light in such a way as to cause a ring around the sun.
