Spare change helps children

It was a great way to make a little extra money for a worthwhile cause.

Shoppers at Southcoast Mall and Shelly Centre swept the corners of their homes and offices, their kitchen counters and under the seats of their cars to come up with change to donate to the Port Shepstone Rotary Club’s ‘Coins for Charity’ last Saturday.

A broad strip of double-sided tape (the ‘smile mile’) was placed across the main promotion court’s floor at the two shopping centres and very soon the tape began to fill with coins and notes.

Donations came from people from all walks of life, young and old, who took just a few moments to contribute and help those in need.

Thandi Bhengu of Margate carefully places her spare change on the double-sided tape.

Port Shepstone Rotary Club member Joan D’ Arcy said fund-raising teams were on standby to tell shoppers more about the ‘Coins for Charity’ fund-raising idea.

“A combined sum of R30 000 was collected at the shopping centres and will be given to Port Shepstone Child Welfare to assist needy children with school uniforms and supplies for the new school year,” explained Mrs D’Arcy.

Jennifer Bedford of Port Shepstone is happy to part with her money for a good cause.

Sam Podmore, fundraising manager at Child Welfare Port Shepstone said that they are grateful for the wonderful support from Rotary Port Shepstone, the sponsors and the public who contributed on the day.

“You certainly have put a smile on many children’s faces as they head back to school this week,” she said.
