Beverage company rewards pupils for recycling
Schools are the perfect partners to create a waste-free South Africa.
Almost 800 schools and 700 000 pupils throughout KZN took part in the 2018 Schools Recycling Programme (SRP), conducted by Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA). The company hosted a regional awards ceremony for local schools at Umthunzi Hotel and Conference on Tuesday this week.

CCBSA regional communication specialist Jessie Moodley told the Herald the recycling programme is part of the company’s commitment to creating a waste-free South Africa and in line with Coca-Cola’s global commitment of a World Without Waste (WWW) by 2030.
“The programme has created over 180 jobs in the past five years, with 78 youngsters employed as recycling representatives and 36 collectors trained and supported. In 2018, the programme recovered 2324 tonnes of recyclable material, which is almost double the amount of 1168 tonnes collected in 2017,” said Ms Moodley.
She mentioned that participating schools earn money from the waste collected and stood a chance to win cash prizes, which could then be used to improve their schools.
“The intention is to create a generation of South Africans committed to ensuring that discarded waste does not end up as litter on a landfill site. Schools are the perfect partners in our quest to create a waste-free South Africa.”
