“She assaulted him with a wooden spoon, banged his head against the door and locked him in the bathroom for five hours without food. The child suffered injuries to his face, bruises to his body and swelling to his eye,” said police spokesman, Captain Petros Mpinge.

The woman has been charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and child neglect. The boy has been placed in a place of safety.

The investigating officer is Sergeant Shaun Pillay of FCS Port Shepstone.

“If you are being abused or know of someone who is, don’t look away, get help. Report this to police, a school teacher, a councillor, a religious leader and through traditional structures,” said Capt Mpinge.

The woman is due to appear in court soon.
