Learning to encourage and raise up leaders in the church

Delegating authority means ceding a measure of control.

Gate Ministries, Port Shepstone hosted a leadership seminar with guest speaker Dr SY (Sagie) Govender last Friday.

Dr Govender is the senior minister of Antioch Christian Tabernacle and founder and presiding apostle of ABC Ministries and founder of ABC (Accurate Building Concepts), a course structured for the apostolic evaluation and accurate building of churches.

He also convenes the ABC Forum, a weekly gathering of pastors from Kwa-Zulu Natal.

He enlightened his guests on how they should encourage and raise up the leaders in their church. “The whole church should have deep confidence that the Lord wants new leaders raised up. Spending time with people is a crucial part of raising up leaders,” says Mr Govender.

He mentioned that in a church there are members with great talent. “But for that to be discovered, someone must advance trust to them, like credit. And good leaders do this. They don’t wait for people to prove themselves, and then provide them with teaching opportunities. No, they see the advantage of something that, with a little encouragement, could grow and flourish.”

Mr Govender reiterated that delegating authority means ceding a measure of control. “And if you’re willing to do that, you need not always have the last word. Not everything must go your way. If you never let people lead in a way contrary to your own opinion, you’re not really letting them lead.”
