Umtamvuna Views: Help maintain the colony of cats
Sterilisation is an ongoing objective and sponsorship is desperately needed.
FERAL cats living at Splash Rock in Port Edward have a precarious existence. The colony of mainly black and white cats has been supported and fed by a number of kind volunteers over the past five years. It seems they are all pretty well-fed, but the reality is that their lives are still fraught with hardship and struggle. Their neighbours are mainly fishermen who often leave rotten bait and tackle lying about and dozens of cats have died horrible deaths from eating hooks and cotton.

Worthy cause
A number of the adult cats have been trapped, sterilised, and returned to their rocky home. Nonetheless, kittens are still being born into the colony and many do not survive infancy due to disease and exposure. Sterilisation is an ongoing objective for the group of caring people who look after these animals and sponsorship is desperately needed. Colonies of feral cats do serve a purpose and getting rid of them is not a solution. As one colony leaves, another will replace them, so it makes sense to keep the colony controlled. Reward offered
Monday this week saw the very sad memorial service for murder victim, Michelle Hague (63). The community rallied in support and the little Port Edward Methodist Church was full.
A number of local businesses donated eats for the tea afterward. Michelle was taking her little dog for its usual walk on the beach near her home in Munster last Saturday afternoon.
She never returned and holidaymakers found her body in the dune bushes. She had been fatally stabbed in the neck. A close family friend commented ‘Michelle was a quiet, gentle person who would never hurt a fly’. Local residents are incensed over this senseless killing and have raised more than R10 000 as a reward for information leading to the apprehension of the criminal/s.
Golfers gather
Port Edward Country Club hosted the monthly KZN Senior Women’s Golf Tournament recently.

Women from as far afield as Amanzimtoti converged on the club and all thoroughly enjoyed the day. They were impressed by the general condition of the course and the high standards of the food. They expressed sincere appreciation to the committee and members of the club for hosting. Winners of the day were Karen Bridgeford from Southbroom and Ann Baldrey of Port Shepstone.
New wheels
Lyn Walton of Banners Rest Village was over the moon when she won a car at the Wild Coast Sun last Sunday afternoon. Lyn plans to drive her brand new Hyundai i10 and retire her old car.

All news to Philippa.
