DA leaders visit mid-South Coast

Many who spoke to Mr Maimane after the meeting pointed out the poor service delivery by Umdoni Municipality in respect of roads, water and electricity and housing in Umzinto and surrounding areas.

DA federal leader Mmusi Maimane and chief whip John Steenhuisen visited the mid-South Coast last week and managed to attract full houses at both venues.

At the Scottburgh Town Hall on Wednesday last week, Mr Steenhuisen spoke at length on Eskom’s recent load shedding, the situation at state-owned enterprises and the DA’s fight against corruption and state capture.

And at the Umzinto Town Hall last Thursday, the party’s federal leader, Mmusi Maimane aired his proposals on ways in which many of the country’s problems could be solved. He touched on topics such as unemployment, water and electricity problems and child grants.

Mr Maimane added he would like to revive the sugarcane industry on the South Coast as this provided an income for many. “The sugar industry is no longer sweet because it is no longer creating jobs. Sugar plantations here are being shut down because nobody knows what the policy of this government is.

“If we want to create jobs, we must help farmers who are planting sugarcane so that we can create work for our people so that towns such as Umzinto don’t become dormitories of unemployment,” he said.

One of the biggest concerns voiced by those at the meeting was load shedding, which Mr Maimane explained is not a natural disaster, but a man-made disaster.

He also highlighted the increases in petrol and food prices from the beginning of April.

Many who spoke to Mr Maimane after the meeting pointed out the poor service delivery by Umdoni Municipality in respect of roads, water and electricity and housing in Umzinto and surrounding areas.

Umdoni’s DA caucus leader, Councillor Edwin Baptie said, “We need a clean government that serves the interests of citizens and not the self-interest and lifestyle of the politically connected.

“The loss of jobs, increased cost of living and taxation, failure to provide secure energy and water supplies and wholesale corruption over recent years, has eroded public trust in the current regime.”
