Looking back on South Coast history, 1991 to 2000: April 16 to 22
It was a week for violent weather and a good deal of man-made mayhem as well.
NSRI made a dramatic rescue.
April 16
1993
“A badly burnt man was plucked from a savagely tossing cargo ship off the Transkei coast by the NSRI crew from Shelly Beach and taken to shore through heavy seas and a 30-knot gale.”
1999
It was announced that St Mike’s golf course was for sale for R4,5-million and an attack on Inkosi Prince Madlala sparked fears of renewed violence in the Madlala area.

April 17
1998
“Shocked community leaders were this week puzzled over whether IFP regional charman, James Zulu’s murder was the result of an ongoing taxi war or politically motivated.”
April 18
1997
“Shobashobane, scene of one of the country’s bloodiest massacres on Christmas Day 1995, is again tense following an attack on Monday night in which an Induna and two other people were killed.”
And… “A Harding woman shot and fatally wounded an intruder who broke into her home last Saturday.”

And there were also man-made disasters. “A massive bitumen spill from a 5 000-litre tanker has polluted the watercourse of the Umtentweni River from the Louisiana area 5km inland.
Some things never seem to change. “Illegal dumping will not be tolerated. That is the clear warning to those who are using a section of road in the Bhobhoyi are bordering Lions Grove as a dump.”
April 19
1991
“Ten people were killed and 14 others injured in unrest incidents near Gamalakhe on Sunday, four of the dead and all of the injured being victims of an attack at a meeting called by Chief Mavundla to elect an induna on Sunday morning.”
1996
“The possible postponement of the already twice-delayed local government elections in KwaZulu-Natal would be a great blow for local election officials who are ‘on track’ for May 29.”

“Three community deacons at St Margaret’s Anglican Church, Margate, became the first three Anglican women priests on the Lower South Coast on Sunday.”

“A horse and trailer transporting peanut butter from Durban to Port Shepstone lost part of its load as it passed through Hibberdene.”
April 21
1995
“There was plenty of drama at Shelly Beach last Friday when huge surf caused boats to flip.”

April 22
1994
“Election fever reached euphoria pitch on Tuesday with the Inkatha Freedom Party’s entry into the national and regional elections, a last-minute decision which has been welcomed by local political representatives.”
“Seven people were killed and four people were injured as violence continued to take its toll on the Lower South Coast this week.”
