Hibberdene Happenings: Broken traffic light causes chaos

Drivers on the main road pay scant attention to the lack of lights and thunder on through the intersection.

HIBBERDENE is once again without its only traffic light. It was seen flapping in an almost gale-force wind one afternoon last week, but now seems to have given up the ghost and isn’t working at all.

This is extremely dangerous, as, although most locals are aware of the problem, drivers on the main road pay scant attention to the lack of lights and thunder on through the intersection. Hopefully it will be repaired soon.

Weekend events

Saturday’s jumble sale was a lot of fun, although it wasn’t that well supported. Great camaraderie existed between stallholders and ‘DJ Funky’s (Peter Laubscher) infectious music was appreciated by all present.

The men’s breakfast, held at the Methodist Church last Saturday morning was well supported. All attendees were riveted by a talk presented by a security official, who gave a though-provoking insight into matters pertaining to security. The next breakfast will be on Saturday, November 2.

Please donate

The ‘Wall of Remembrance’ at the Methodist Church has been rebuilt and looks really good. Once the plaques have been replaced, which should be before the end of this week, it will look as good as new.

Thanks are extended to all those concerned for their hard work. The church is appealing to members of the congregation and others who may have spare shrubs or plants to please donate them to help fill in the gaps left in the garden after the devastating April floods. All donations will be gratefully received.

Ring the dates

Remember that the Youth Group will be leading the church service on the Sunday after next (October 20). This annual service is usually very cute and entertaining, and should bring a smile to the faces of, or maybe even a tear to the eyes, of the congregation.

Bookings are still available for the eye clinic on October 16. Contact your scribe at 039 6992536 or 073 1653961.

Diarise the Methodist Church’s next jumble sale, scheduled for Saturday, November 30, from 8.30am to 12pm. A variety of pre-owned treasures will be on sale and you might be able to pick up some Christmas bargains.

Happy days

Celebrating birthdays this week are Fanie Venter (9th), Carel van Rensburg (10th), Piet Snyman and Bessie Lemmer (11th), Nathan Hillman (12th), Edgar Lilje (14th), Arlene Berry and Cindy Janssen (15th), while Cindy and her husband Peter celebrate their anniversary on the same day.

Barney Viviers is not at all well at the moment, so please remember him, his wife Dorothy and all others unwell in your thoughts and prayers. Don’t forget to keep Lizzie busy with Hibberdene news and snippets.
