Hospice’s Tree of Light switched on
Family and friends gathered around the shimmering tree and enjoyed quality time with those nearest and dearest to them.
The South Coast Hospice’s Tree of Light was officially switched on at the Southcoast Mall’s food court recently.
South Coast Hospice fund-raising coordinator ‘BT’ King said the Tree of Light represents the love, care and concern for those afflicted with a terminal disease or the memory of someone special, even a precious pet which has passed away.

“The switching on of the lights ceremony was an opportunity for the public to let the light shine for December, as family and friends gathered around the tree, sang carols and enjoyed quality time with those nearest and dearest to them,” said Ms King.
She added that the tree of Light is a shining beacon of love and remembrance, and a tradition celebrated annually by hospices all over the world. “Through the support of the community, hospice can bring palliative care and dignity to many battling a terminal disease.”
Guests were given the opportunity to inscribe the names of their loved ones on a star and hang it on the tree before the ceremony started. Special guest, Saroj Chellan of Port Shepstone was given the honour of switching on the lights.
Entertainment included a nativity play, carol singing and performances by children of Tiny Town Play Centre and the Margate Pipes and Drums band. South Coast Hospice gives thanks the community for its continued support of the annual Tree of Light project.
