#Stoptherot – peaceful march planned

Phillip urged all South Coasters to come together and present a united front at the march.

A peaceful protest against Ugu District Municipality and its management is being planned for next Thursday, February 27.

Stop The Rot organisers met with members of Central Crime Intelligence, Public Safety Law Enforcement, police, the office of the mayor and Ugu representatives yesterday (Wednesday).

The group submitted its application for consent to hold a gathering to Ray Nkonyeni Municipality on February 7.

The organising committee, comprising Mkululi White, Ayanda Mkize, Phillip Lennon, Chris Prinsloo, Sizwe Sifo, Vanessa Murray and Lizette Greeff now await approval for the protest.

In the meantime, the committee has begun to gather support for the march.

“We have exhausted all avenues of communication with Ugu. Enough is enough – it has been years of living with an unreliable water supply, and hundreds of excuses from the service provider,” said Phillip.

Mkululi added that his concern was for the elderly and the sick in particular who battle to live without water.

“This is just not acceptable,” he said.

If they receive the go-ahead, marchers will assemble at Chris Hani Square (the former Dick King parking lot) in Port Shepstone at 9am on Thursday.

At 10am, marchers will set off for the Ugu offices at 28 Connor Street in Port Shepstone where a memorandum will be handed to an Ugu representative.

The #StopTheRot Facebook page was specifically established to plan and execute this peaceful protest.

The group is strongly opposed to any political grandstanding.

It stressed that this would not be tolerated and that no party political flags or banners would be allowed – only the South African flag could be flown.

Phillip urged all South Coasters to come together and present a united front at the march.

“We need funds to assist with public transport for marchers to and from the gathering,” he said.

He also appealed for volunteer marshals to come forward.

Non-profit organisation Looking After Leisure Bay has volunteered to clean up after the march.

Anyone who would like to contribute in any way can WhatsApp Phillip at 083 299 7199.
