Despite the efforts of rescue crews, a man drowned at Fig Tree beach between Southbroom and Ramsgate at the weekend.
According to Jeremiah Jackson, NSRI Shelly Beach station commander, NSRI rescue swimmers, the Saps, police search and rescue, lifeguards and Med-Evac ambulance service responded to eye-witness reports of a drowning in progress last Saturday afternoon.

It is believed a man, aged 39, from KwaZikwa, near Port Edward was caught in rip currents while wading in waist-deep water.
Lifeguards launched Malibu rescue boards, reached the man in the surfline, rescued and brought him to the beach where paramedics declared him dead.
Police have opened an inquest docket.
