Hailstorms destroy 64 homes

Some families were left completely homeless while others lost their valuables.

Heavy rains accompanied by hailstorms left a trail of destruction in the Umzumbe, Ray Nkonyeni and Umuziwabantu municipal areas recently.

An assessment conducted by Ugu Disaster Management and officials from local municipalities revealed that 190 households had been affected.

Some 64 houses were completely destroyed, affecting 942 people.

Fortunately only one injury was reported, in Umuziwabantu.

Ugu District mayor Sizwe Ngcobo, accompanied by Umzumbe Municipality’s acting mayor Londolo Zungu, councillors from various municipalities and traditional leaders rolled up their sleeves, offering emergency relief in the form of blankets, food parcels and plastic sheets to affected communities.

According to Ugu spokesman France Zama, emergency relief support was ongoing.

Visiting the affected families, Cllr Ngcobo offered words of comfort and support, saying municipal officials from disaster centres would continue with their assessments and would closely monitor the situation.
