Conservancy focuses on forests, fireflies and fantasies
The day will begin in the park at 8am with an hour-long 'Spirits of the Forest' yoga session with Christian Kruger.
There is a spectacle in Southbroom less well known than the barn swallows coming in to roost in the Umkobi lagoon – the magical display of a colony of fireflies lighting up summer evenings in Eyles Park.

March 21 is International Day of Forests and the Southbroom Conservancy is staging a day-long event in Eyles Park, not only to mark the day and to acknowledge mankind’s long debt to nature, but also to draw attention to the role as the custodian of Southbroom’s green lungs and to create an awareness of what is being done and what is needed to preserve them for future generations.
Amanda Murray handles the small not-for-profit group’s marketing and PR and is the force behind its message ‘Love Green’.
“We are creating awareness of all the good that is being done behind the scenes. We need more members in order to do more. We need a kitty, particularly for when there is a crisis.”

Saturday the 21st’s event is titled Forests, Fireflies & Fantasies.
The day will begin in the park at 8am with an hour-long ‘Spirits of the Forest’ yoga session with Christian Kruger.
The cost will be R50 per person and will go to the conservancy.
Seven local artists – Bev Annegarn, Celeste van der Merwe, Danette Stewart, Diane and Keith Erasmus, Kate Grieve and Savannah Burns – will be exhibiting and selling work linked to this theme under the trees surrounding the park.
There will also be live music to create a ‘Cafe del Mar’ atmosphere. Stefan le Roux, on guitar, will be making a debut public appearance from 10am to 12.30pm, followed by IRWe, who play gentle, soft rock, from 12.30pm to 2.30pm.
Botanist Anne Skelton, who is also chairman of the conservancy, will lead walks in the Bushbuck Trail at 10.30am and 3pm.
