WATCH: Huge shark caught in sardine net on South Coast … crowds cheer as it’s safely released

One of the added benefits of the sardine run is getting to see the sharks, but probably not as close as this!

A very big shark, in all likelihood a bronze whaler (known to follow the sardines) was caught in a sardine seine net at a beach off Ramsgate, KZN earlier today (June 1).

After a few minutes of struggling on the sand while still in the net, with the very careful assistance of the fishermen and some in the gathering crowd, it was freed.

The sardine run has already created excitement, despite it happening in Level 3 of the national lockdown.

But this video, shot by Faeez Fuz Mamdoo, doing the rounds on WhatsApp, and sent in by fishing fanatic Hugo Botha, is something extraordinary.

At this stage the fishermen have not been identified, but it’s clear they have done all they can to safely get the shark out of the net and back into the sea.

After wriggling ‘leopard crawl style’ across the wet sand it then still takes a few attempts to get going in the shallow water, rolling over with its mouth open wide.

At first there are concerns it may not be able to get out, but eventually a big enough wave comes in for the shark to find its bearings and make its way out to sea.

The crowd cheers wildly, first possibly in relief and then in the realisation that something a little special and a lot unusual has just happened.
