True love in the time of Covid-19

All that parents ever want is love, honour and respect from their children, everything else is a bonus, they said.

Sixty years ago, on this very day (June 4), Ronald Hamilton and Margery Hancorn-Smith said ‘I do’ in a quaint ceremony in Harding.

After getting married, the couple settled in the seaside town of Park Rynie where they began raising their large family of eight children, and where Ronald worked as a spray-painter.

This was something he loved doing. They would often disagree about how little he would charge his private customers for the job done because he took pity on them.

Thereafter they moved to Port Shepstone where they were blessed with twins!

The happy couple don’t regret for a moment having a large family of six daughters and four sons, in addition to (later on) their eight spouses, 24 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The two enjoyed good health until recently when Ronald, now 83 years old, fell ill.

They have enjoyed the simple things in life. Margery, now 80 years old, cannot get enough of good ice-cream and Ronald is just happy to have a house full of children.

They love to cook and enjoy each other’s company.

The secret to being married to each other for such a long period, they said, was because of the vow they took before God and so they wish to honour that promise they made to Him and to each other.

The advice from an ancient book ‘honour your father and your mother that it may go well with you’ are words their children live by.

While the pandemic threatens to rage on the outside, the family quietly celebrated their lifetime of love and commitment to each other, by sending them their favourite treats, complete with all the bells and whistles that such a memorable day brings.
