Council approved a total budget of some R1.5-billion for the 2020/21 financial year, with an allocation of R1.2-billion to the operational budget and a capital budget allocation of more than R267-million.

Acting Ugu Mayor Phumlile Mthiyane said, “This draft budget is seeking to strike a balance between on-going service delivery imperatives of water and sanitation services while also responding to the developmental challenges confronting our district. And the tabling of this budget also takes place at a time when our country is facing tough economic times compounded by the unprecedented pandemic of Covid-19.”

With the main focus of this budget being on the core municipal function of water and sanitation services, major projects would be implemented across the district to ensure security of water supply, with a specific focus on industrial areas in order to boost economic growth, said the municipality.

Additionally, it said  an allocation of more than R140-million had been made towards the maintenance and repairs of municipal infrastructure.

A tariff increase of eight percent for water and sanitation services was approved, with effect from July 1 this year.
