Shots fired during school burglary

Shots were fired at police when they responded to a burglary at a school in Lamont near Margate in the early hours of last Wednesday (August 12).

Margate police had reacted to a complaint of business burglary at the school at about 3.15am.

Members of the community had alerted the police after hearing noises at the premises.

“When police arrived, the suspects opened fire on them and the officers retaliated,” said police spokesman, Sergeant Sibu Ncane.

No one was injured. Police recovered 11 laptops, four bicycles, a sound system and a flat screen television.

A white Isuzu LDV alleged to be used by the suspects was impounded.

Margate Saps commander, Brigadier William Slabbert thanked Sergeants Sihle Nacyiyane, Ayanda Mtshixa and Sicelo Ngcobo and Constable Nkululeko Shinga who were off duty but assisted at the crime scene.

Their swift response resulted in the recovery of the stolen property.

He also thanked community members who reported the incident as they played a valuable role in community policing.
