Road rehab project worth millions under way between St Patrick’s and Shayamoya

The project represents an important investment in the community.

Umdoni Municipality marked the commencement of the R7.9m rehabilitation of the St Patrick’s to Shayamoya road project with a sod-turning ceremony in Ward 11 on September 28.

The project will see the rehabilitation of 2km of existing road between St Patrick’s and Shayamoya, and is expected to be completed within six months

CPG Trading has been appointed as the contractor, with Mzibani Consulting Engineers serving as the consulting engineers.

The scope of work includes the rehabilitation of the existing pavement, in-situ recycling and stabilisation, installation of a 40mm continuously graded asphalt surface, approximately 1500m of concrete kerb and channel, concrete-lined open stormwater drains and road markings.

The project is expected to improve the quality and safety of the road while enhancing access and connectivity for residents and other road users travelling between St Patrick’s and Shayamoya.

Speaking at the sod-turning ceremony, mayor Mbali Cele-Luthuli said the project represents an important investment in the community.

“This is more than the rehabilitation of a road; it is an investment in the daily lives and future of our communities,” she said.

“A reliable and properly maintained road improves access, enhances road safety and makes it easier for residents to reach schools, healthcare facilities, businesses and other essential services.”

“We are pleased to see this project moving from planning to implementation, and we look forward to the positive impact it will have on the people who use this road every day.”

The project will also contribute to local economic participation, with 10 local labourers and security personnel to be appointed for the duration of the project.

Municipal officials will monitor the implementation of the project to ensure that the approved scope of works is delivered effectively and that the community derives maximum benefit.
