Three in court for kidnapping and murder

The suspects allegedly kidnapped a man who had received a large payment from the Road Accident Fund.

Three suspects aged between 30 and 32 appeared in the Umzimkhulu Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Thursday, November 5) following their arrest by members from the Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation and the Provincial Trio Crimes Task at Mariannhill, Durban earlier this week.

“During March 2020, a 46-year-old man received R1.3 million from the Road Accident Fund (RAF). In June the man was allegedly kidnapped at Ntsikeni and his family frantically tried to search for him without any success,” said police spokesman, Capt Simphiwe Mhlongo.

In their quest, they called his phone and it was answered by an unknown person who demanded a R10 000 ransom for his release.

“The family reported the matter to the police and a search ensued immediately. Two weeks later, the body of the victim was found handcuffed with gunshot wounds,” said Capt Mhlongo.

The relentless investigation finally yielded good results when the three were finally traced and arrested.  Various items were seized during the operation and will be subjected to further investigation.
