Unions pressure Ugu
Samwu members say that they feel the Cogta investigation was very biased.
About 100 South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) members marched from Chris Hani Square to hand a list of demands to officials at the Ugu District main office in Port Shepstone yesterday (November 25).
One of the demands was that 127 Samwu members who had been dismissed by Ugu be re-instated on December 1, 2020.
South African Communist Party (SACP) and Samwu members from Ugu and other regions in the province gathered at the municipal offices to hand over a list of demands to Ugu mayor, Cllr Sizwe Ngcobo.
Other demands in the memorandum are:
* The municipality must withdraw all charges against shop stewards.
* Vela Mazibuko who is the Corporate Services General Manager must also be investigated by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta).
* Ugu must have a consistent and constant water supply to communities.
Mthandeni Ngcobo, the chairman of Ugu Samwu, who is amongst the 127 workers that had been dismissed said they are unhappy about the Cogta investigation report on suspended Ugu municipal manager, DD Naidoo.
“We feel the report was biased and not detailed enough. We need a thorough report and we want council to take a decision on Mr Mazibuko and Mr Naidoo,” said Mr Ngcobo.
President of Samwu, Nelson Mokgotho said that they supported the march and will be waiting to hear from Ugu and other municipalities that have the same issues.
Mayor Ngcobo accepted the memorandum and said that he will go through the demands and try to respond on time.
