Cross erected for fallen Park Rynie RTI hero
Tim Simpson died when his state vehicle was engulfed in flames while on duty on the N2 near Scottburgh.
After the tragic death of Park Rynie RTI’s award-winning Provincial Inspector Timothy Shane Simpson, community members came together to pay their respects to the fallen hero at the accident site on September 26.
Simpson died when his state vehicle was engulfed in flames while on duty on the N2 near Scottburgh on September 22.
Authorities established that he burnt to death.
The KZN Department of Transport is investigating the case, with a specialised team of RTI and Saps members.
In the interim, Simpson’s loved ones joined friends, colleagues and community members on the N2 to erect a cross in his memory.

RTI temporarily closed a section of the N2 to allow locals to pay their respects to Simpson. A white cross was erected on the site.
Simpson was known for his dedicated, no-nonsense approach at RTI Park Rynie.
He was also a well-known snake rescuer and assisted many over the years. One of his most famous snake rescues was a three-metre rock python in Dududu, which was removed from a route used by schoolchildren.
