Hamilton wins after Grosjean’s fiery crash
The recently employed 'halo device' also played a major part in his survival.
Lewis Hamilton won the Bahrain Grand Prix, taking it in his stride, but only after Romain Grosjean had a heart-stopping moment when he crashed into the barriers at high speed on the first lap.
Grosjean’s car broke into two pieces as it split the Armco, which sliced the car down the middle, one half attached to the engine and the other half attached to the driver’s cockpit, with the fuel tank located in the middle.
This resulted in a huge blaze, from which Grosjean was lucky to emerge almost unscathed.
He suffered broken ribs and some burns to his arms and hands.
It was an awful moment for everyone who saw it happen and it was almost unbelievable to see him sprint from the inferno into the arms of the medical doctor who, with driver of the medical car, South African Alan van der Merwe, had arrived at the scene in record time.
We all indeed were most grateful that Romain had escaped, and that his life had been saved.

The mood for the race was subdued, but it continued as normal except for a few smaller incidents, while Hamilton in his Mercedes continued on his way to win the race.
In second place after a very good drive was Max Verstappen in the Red Bull Honda, for a change followed home by a very happy team mate Alexander Albon into third on the podium.
It had been a mediocre race at a fast track and we will see next Sunday’s Sakhir Grand Prix race at the same circuit, but with a number of alternate corners incorporated.
