Third ‘Paul Harris’ award for Rotarian Wilma
Wilma was honoured to have received a third award.
For most Rotarians, being presented with a Paul Harris Fellow award is a highlight of some significance.
Receiving three? Well, that’s commitment and contribution to the Rotary cause on a whole new level.
That honour has come the way of Wilma Lig, who was presented with her third Paul Harris Fellow award at a recent function of the Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast.
Wilma’s time with Rotary spans nearly two decades.
In 2001, she joined the Rotary Club of Rustenburg, creating history – and possibly a few waves – as the only women in a club of 38 men, at that stage.
It wasn’t long before she made an impression and she served as president in 2004 and 2005.
This came after she received her first Paul Harris Fellow award in 2003.
In 2010, she became the first woman to be elected as assistant governor in Region 9400.
Her second Paul Harris Fellow came in 2014, followed by the third one this year.
“My first major project as a team leader was a big soup cook, 5 500 litres of soup to be exact. We tried to break a Guinness world record which we did, but unfortunately, it was not recognised because of a description error,” she said.
Wilma was honoured to have received a third award.
“It’s a wonderful feeling, being recognised and acknowledged for the work you do, which of course is a passion,” she said.
Wilma is the current public image director for the Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast.
It’s a role she has occupied for several years and, with her at the helm, the club has received eight regional public image awards, including being an overall winner in the category of ‘Best Photograph for a Rotary Moment’.
Club president Gavin Jepson said he believed Wilma was truly deserving due to all the work she does for the club. It was presented to her by outgoing president Brian Blumrick.
“Wilma is a star when it comes to PR, and especially the way in which she promotes the club in all forms of media. She has only been with us for a short time but she is already a major asset,” he said.
What is a Paul Harris Fellow award?
The award, which is named after Rotary International founder, Paul Harris, is given to deserving members who give service above self within the club and community. It’s the highest honour a Rotarian can receive.
