Ons Winkel lends a helping hand

Solidarity Helping Hands (Solidarteit Helpende Hande) is an organisation which recently opened its 75th national Ons Winkel charity shop in Marine Drive, Margate.

The shop receives clothing donated by generous folk which are re-sold as thrift items in order to fund various projects, such as helping finance students with their tertiary education.

She said the organisation also does fundraising events and that funds don’t only go towards helping students, but also towards ad hoc projects.

“Sometimes we support schools which may be in need of funding for feeding schemes, or to help learners with uniforms and stationery,” she said.

Ons Winkel, founded eight years, has continued to expand, and is now a fully fledged national chain store and brand name.

Shop manager Beulah Smith said she was excited to open a new chapter for SHH in Margate.

“I am very happy to be a part of this. We will definitely change peoples lives and that is the main motive, to bring positive change in our community,” she said.

“There is still plenty of work to do, but we’ve made a start and have loads of beautiful clothes available for sale. We also accept donations of anything that can help,” she added.
