Lab services celebrates international accreditation status

The management of KwaZulu-Natal National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) threw an impressive celebration party for the international accreditation status obtained by Port Shepstone Laboratory Services under the leadership of Thembisile Cele last Friday.

“This achievement is a milestone, which followed an extensive assessment conducted on November 10 and 11 last year, by the South African National Accreditation Service (SANAS) committee, which is an independent legislated body for compliance with international standards,” said Phumza Morai, PRO of Port Shepstone Regional Hospital.

“The assessment involved evaluating the implementation of quality standards as well as the competence of the laboratory to perform the designated tests that fall under chemistry, haematology and microbiology.”

The business unit manager for laboratories in Harry Gwala and Ugu District, Martin Xaba invited staff from various KwaZulu-Natal laboratory service business units, Port Shepstone Regional Hospital management and Ugu Health District Director to be part of this impressive celebration function.

The KwaZulu-Natal Laboratory Services Area Manager, Sibulele Bandezi, said this achievement is a confirmation that any test result performed at Port Shepstone Laboratory is comparable to the same test performed anywhere in the world using the same methodology.

In recognition of this goal, Ugu District Director, Ntokozo Mkhize, Port Shepstone Hospital CEO, Bawinile Ndlovu and Dr Busi Dlamini, Senior Manager for Medical Services applauded the Port Shepstone Laboratory staff by giving messages of support.

“’This achievement shows a steady and high standard of performance by the Port Shepstone Laboratory staff in providing a high quality international comparable service,” said Ms Morai.
