Abalone thieves offer police bribe

The Hawks members from the Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime investigation team arrested two suspects for illegal possession of abalone and corruption which occurred at Harding last Friday (April 30).

The corruption charge was added after the suspects offered police a bribe.

It is alleged that Mazer Farm Watch Security staff were busy with observation duties on the N2 near Guy Payn’s sawmill in Harding when they noticed a suspicious vehicle. They then contacted the Harding police station members for assistance.

“Police searched the vehicle and found two large bags containing fresh shelled abalone to the street value of approximately R176 500. Two suspects aged 45 and 56 were arrested,” said Hawks spokesman, Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo.

The Hawks members were summoned to the scene, whilst at the scene the suspects offered a bribe of R7 300.

They were then also charged for corruption.

They are expected to appear in the Harding Magistrate’s Court this week.
