Umzinto’s Textile Road rehabilitation begins

Umdoni Municipality is in the process of rehabilitating the area to regain its fading ‘Jewel of the South Coast’ status.
In order to do this, comprehensive rehabilitation work of Umdoni’s infrastructure will be carried out over a period of time, including the long-awaited rehabilitation of Umzinto’s infamous Textile Road in ward 13.
For many years, this road has been a nuisance to motorists because of numerous potholes, damaged speed humps and has caused inconveniences for pedestrians as there is no proper walkway.
Mayor Sibongile Khathi conducted a sod turning on the road last week to mark the beginning of the road construction.
“This area will be witnessing a lot of activity over the next six months as work commences to rehabilitate the 740m x 6m road,” said Umdoni Municipality’s communications manager, Sphelele Cele.
Ms Cele said that a budget of about R4.8-million has been allocated for the execution of this project.
Spadework included excavation of the existing base layer, rip and re-compacting of the existing sub base, construction of a sidewalk, concrete kerbing and channelling, installation of a 150mm G2 base course and 30 mm asphalt surface among other work.
“When the municipality launches service delivery projects in various communities, the eradication of the triple scourge of poverty, unemployment and inequality is always an important aspect of community development to consider,” said Mayor Khathi.
“It is our responsibility to ensure that local people benefit from such projects, especially the unemployed so that they are able to receive temporary income and look after their families while simultaneously attaining skills and experience for future job opportunities.”
Communities are also informed that the implementation of the multimillion rand service delivery turnaround strategy has commenced.
“By the end of this special service delivery improvement project, our community will witness a significant change in the municipality’s road network, electrification, grass cutting, street lighting, refuse removal and maintenance of community facilities.” added Mayor Khathi.
