Guns seized, 27 arrests in joint operation
The police confiscated a number of items during the operation which included a shotgun, four handguns, two toy guns and three gas pistols.
A joint operation by the Ugu District, Port Shepstone and Margate Firearms Liquor and Second Hand Goods (FLASH) Units, as well as the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) yielded positive results when compliance inspections were conducted in the Port Shepstone policing precinct recently.
Officers conducted random inspections on several security companies to ensure compliance with the Firearms Control Act.
Inspections were also carried out on security officers in the Port Shepstone CBD and shopping malls.
Twenty-seven people, aged between 30 and 72 were arrested for various offences ranging from illegal possession of firearms, unlicensed businesses and rendering security services whilst not registered.
Some were released on bail, while others received warnings to appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on fixed dates.

One vehicle from an unregistered security company was seized and impounded for investigation.
All security personnel including car guards must be registered with PSIRA and no private firearms, gas pistols or toy guns are permitted to be used by the registered security companies or guards.
