Municipality clamps down on illegal connections

The Ugu District Municipality has taken a firm stance towards dealing with illegal water connections in the district following the adoption of the Illegal and Unauthorised Water Connections Policy.

This policy will effectively aid the municipality in dealing with the widespread domestic and business illegal connections across the district.
Some residents and businesses have intentionally continued to illegally connect water, displaying the highest level of disregard of the legal implications they could face in this regard.
Illegal water connections within the district continue to be a major contributor to water disruptions being experienced in most areas.
This is currently costing the municipality millions of rands every year, which has an adverse effect on the municipality’s ability to adequately maintain its infrastructure.
The municipality began the process of holding public engagement with stakeholders on the provisions and implications of this policy last Thursday.
