Family ‘feud’ leads to winnings of R75 000

The Mpunzana family of Hibberdene, who won R75 000 in dramatic fashion, included mom Bongiwe, and siblings Nhlakanipho, Nondumiso, Phindokuhle and Anele.

The much loved internationally acclaimed television game show, Family Feud, has made its way to South African shores, and the latest episode, which aired last week Sunday, featured some local South Coast flavour.

The show, which is hosted by international American superstar comedian, actor and author Steve Harvey, featured the Mpunzana family of Hibberdene, who were crowned winners in an episode that saw the South Coasters make a nerve-wracking comeback.

The Mpunzana family of Hibberdene, who won R75 000 in dramatic fashion, included mom Bongiwe, and siblings Nhlakanipho, Nondumiso, Phindokuhle and Anele.

“It was a nail-biting episode which showcased our comeback in the fourth and final rounds. We were on zero points after the first three rounds and things turned around for us as we managed to make it to the fast money round with 410 points. This was the round where we play for the jackpot of R75 000,” said Anele, team captain on the night.

The Mpunzana family is originally from Durban, but relocated to the South Coast in 2013.

“There were a number of reasons why my parents picked the South Coast. They would come down here to relax on the beautiful beaches. Even now, when at home, it always feels one is on holiday. And of course, there’s the famous Fifi’s Fresh Fish which our family loves,” Anele said.

Being on the show was a dream come true for Anele and her family, who have always been big fans.

“We’ve watched a number of episodes of the international seasons so when the show came to South Africa we followed the first season diligently. Surprisingly, at around the same time my sister saw a tweet that Season 2 auditions were opened and we didn’t think twice about sending through an audition tape,” she said.

Those who missed it need not worry, as they can still catch the Mpunzana family in action in a repeat of last week’s episode this Sunday at 13:40 on eTV extra (channel 195).
