Brand new books for Southbroom Library
The former public library was taken over by volunteers 12 years ago, when the municipality withdrew funding.
Southbroom Library was the happy recipient of 70 new books, which were won in a recent promotion by Exclusive Books.
Library volunteer Julie Walker wrote a winning entry, motivating why the library’s 200 members would benefit from an injection of new books.
“The online competition was run a few months ago and I can’t remember exactly what I wrote, for which I’m rather relieved,” said Julie.
The former public library was taken over by volunteers 12 years ago, when the municipality withdrew funding.
Organiser Elaine Harrison explained that the library is funded via donations, sales of duplicate books, a Christmas hamper raffle and support from the Southbroom Ratepayers’ Association.
“Our main problem is where to put the new books. We have recently catalogued our collection of more than 7000 titles. We need additional bookshelves and reading space, which is hard to find. We are looking at what we can do within the existing building,” said Elaine.
Southbroom Library is open from 09:00 to 12:30 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
