The best South African cricket players of all time

A fantastic all-rounder, Jacques Kallis was considered by many to be one of the best cricketers of all time.

Cricket is one of the most popular sports in the world. Up until very recently, it held the number two title, though in 2022/23 basketball blitzed past it. Still, cricket has 2.6 billion fans around the world, making it the third most popular sport worldwide.

Cricket in South Africa

Interestingly enough, the game is also the third most popular sport in South Africa, behind football and rugby. Though traditionally, cricket was seen as a ‘white’ sport in South Africa, since the 1990s it has begun to expand in popularity. Nowadays, black South Africans, Indian South Africans, and white South Africans all enjoy the game together.

The game has attained such a level of popularity, that South Africans have hopped on the SRL bandwagon. Not only do they follow and bet on real-life games, but they also place wagers on international games and the simulated reality league, which has become incredibly popular in the country.

South Africa has produced a ton of excellent cricket players. In this article, we would like to go over a list of the best that the country has had to offer throughout the years. So, without further ado, let us take a look at the top SA cricket players of all time.

Jacques Kallis

We should note off the bat that it is impossible to talk about all of the great cricket players that South Africa has to offer. There have been so many fantastic players to come from the country, that listing them all in this article would be impossible. However, one thing is certain. A list mentioning the greatest of all time must not omit Jacques Kallis.

Considered by many to be one of the best cricket players of all time, Jacques Kallis was a fantastic all-rounder. To this day, he remains the only player to attain more than 10.000 runs, and score over 250 wickets in both the One Day International and Test cricket formats.

He has achieved the Player of the Tournament award, Player of the Year Award, and a whole host of other honours several times. To call him one of the best South African players would be an understatement. It is more accurate to say Kallis is one of the greatest cricketers of all time.

Hugh Tayfield

Hugh Tayfield is somewhat of an anomaly in South African cricket. Plenty of fans of the sport know that the country has had trouble producing top-tier spinners. However, there are a few exceptions, and Hugh Tayfield is certainly one of them.

Tayfield participated in 37 Test matches for the South African team between the late 40s and early 60s. An incredible spinner, he was the fastest player from the country to ever achieve 100 wickets. He held that record for decades, until it was broken in 2008, by a player we will discuss shortly.

Hugh Tayfield came from a cricket-playing family, where his uncle, brothers, and cousins all played cricket. However, few would argue that Hugh Tayfield overshadowed all of them, and has certainly gone down in history as one of the greatest players of all time.

Dale Steyn

Finally, we get to the man who broke Tayfield’s record, Dale Steyn. Steyn was a bowler, and what a bowler he was. Cricket aficionados often regard him as the greatest fast bowler of all time, or at least among the top 10. In the 2007/08 season, Steyn broke Tayfield’s record, and also achieved 78 wickets at an average of 16,24. Naturally, he was a shoe-in for the Test Cricketer of the Year Award.

Steyn retired from Test cricket four years ago. He continued to play limited-over cricket for the next two years. However, he ultimately retired from the sport entirely in 2021. Still, he remains one of the best to ever wield the cricket bat.
