Security officer shot by cellphone thief

The search is on for a man who shot a security officer in Umtentweni.

A Lazer 911 security officer, Wenzel Spies, suffered a gunshot wound after a suspect opened fire on him and two of his colleagues in Umtentweni last Wednesday.

The reaction officers had tracked a stolen cellphone to Norwood Road, Umtentweni, at about 03:30.

“When they arrived outside the property, a suspect was spotted, and he was asked to stop. Instead, he responded by firing a number of shots at our reaction officers, who returned fire. Unfortunately, one of our officers was hit on the lower leg,” said senior area manager Robbie Pypers.

He added that the gunman fled, and the cellphone on him was tracked to the railway line but then switched off. “It’s unknown if he sustained injuries,” said Pypers.

“Officer Spies was taken to hospital by Lazer ambulance and was in good spirits. Thankfully, the bullet wound was not life-threatening, and he will be discharged today (Thursday),” said Pypers.

A case has been registered with Port Shepstone Saps, and investigations are continuing, as well as a search for the gunman.
