Hefty sentence for rapist, robber
The Umzumbe man was convicted on all three counts and sentenced to imprisonment.
Nthuthuko Mtolo (23) of Nqobheni location near Umzumbe was sentenced in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Monday last week after he pleaded guilty to housebreaking, robbery with aggravating circumstance and rape.
He was effectively sentenced to five years for the housebreaking, 15 years for robbery and 10 years for rape.
According to police, Mtolo broke into a residence in Woodgrange near Hibberdene on October 11, where he threatened a couple with a knife. He tied the hands and legs of the husband (48) and raped the wife (27).
Mtolo took valuables from the house and escaped through a window, but he was arrested by security officers who were alerted by a neighbour regarding a disturbance.
The investigating officer in the case was Sergeant Nokwazi Mhlanga of Port Shepstone Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
