Scammed pensioners seek help from reaction unit

Pensioners paid money to go on a trip to Drakensberg, which never happened.

Last week, a post on social media by Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) stated that 72 pensioners (the majority of complaints from Umkomaas) were scammed.

The now-viral post indicated that these pensioners paid money to go on a trip to Drakensberg, which never happened, and the money was never refunded.

As per RUSA, the families that contacted them were seeking assistance for the pensioners who had paid R1 950 each for a four-day trip to a resort in the Drakensberg from December 17-21 last year.

The money was paid to a man, and payments were made in cash and EFT via a senior citizens group.

According to the complainants, the initial holiday was cancelled due to inclement weather. The trip was postponed to March this year and once again cancelled with promises of refunds.

When the travel company became evasive, the families believed that they were scammed and made enquiries with the resort. It was then established that the accommodation and bus company were never initially booked.

Information in this case was provided to RUSA by the complainants, and further information received indicated that pensioners from Gauteng and East London were also scammed for the same trip.

Since the post had gone viral, RUSA stated that the tour company contacted them and advised that refunds will be processed soon.
