A Hibberdene woman (37) has been sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment, suspended for five years, after being found guilty of common assault and child neglect in the Scottburgh Regional Court this month.
The woman cannot be named to protect the identity of the child.
The woman severely assaulted her four-year-old child in May last year with a wet towel and with her hands.
The child sustained injuries to her neck, eyes, ears and cheeks.
Police say that this sentence serves as a deterrent to primary caregivers and parents that crimes against the most vulnerable members of communities will not be overlooked.
The public is urged to report incidents of rape, child abuse, and neglect to police.
This case was investigated by Constable Nosiphiwe Jeza of FCS Port Shepstone.
