Bail granted in Umkomaas murder case
The family now urges the public, gender-based violence organisations and activists to show their support by attending the next court date.
Stanley Tait (37) appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday this week in connection with the murder of Coleen Thaver (32).
He applied for bail, which was set at R2 000, with specific conditions. He is expected to return to court on May 19.
One of Thaver’s family members, Maya Thomas, expressed her desire for justice.
She also assured Thaver’s child that his mother’s death will not be in vain and that justice will ultimately be served.
Thaver, an Umkomaas resident, went missing on March 21, and her decomposing body was found deep in the bushes near a footpath leading into Venus Road, Sunpark on April 4.
Police investigations led detectives to Tait (alleged to be Thaver’s ex-boyfriend), who was taken in for questioning and subsequently arrested. His first court appearance was on April 7 on a charge of murder.
The family now urges the public, gender-based violence organisations and activists to show their support by attending the next court date.
“Violence against women is a grave issue in South Africa that must be addressed through the conviction and sentencing of those who commit such inhumane acts,” said Dawn Gounden of Renegades Search and Rescue and family spokesperson.
“Coleen is survived by her son and family, who continue to grieve her loss while cherishing the precious memories they shared with her.”
