Police crackdown targets drugs, illegal guns and shebeens in Margate

Operations are conducted weekly across Ugu District, targeting hotspots and high-crime areas.

Margate Saps held a stop-and-search operation at Margate Taxi Rank recently. This resulted in the arrest of a man (31) found in possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition, and drugs.

Gas guns, often used in robberies due to their realistic appearance, were also confiscated.

Operations continued at Masinenge, where police confiscated alcohol from illegal shebeens and seized dangerous weapons such as knives and spears, commonly used in assaults and violent crimes. A man (30) was arrested for possession of mandrax tablets, cash, a knife and copper wire.

Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Anton Kapp said such operations are conducted weekly across Ugu District, targeting hotspots and high-crime areas. He added that larger-scale operations with law enforcement partners will continue throughout the festive season. He encouraged the public to engage in local CPF initiatives and report criminal activities to police, to help curb crime in their communities.
