Decomposing body found below Umzinto River bridge

The unknown man's body was recovered by Saps Search and Rescue.

Police have opened a case of murder after the body of an unknown man was found below the Umzinto River bridge on the N2 northbound lane on Monday (April 27).

According to Saps, empty 9mm cartridges were found on the scene, indicating the deceased could have been shot and thrown over the bridge.

The discovery was made when a pedestrian crossing the bridge became suspicious after noticing what seemed to be blood on the side of the bridge, as well as the spent cartridges.

Police were contacted, and thereafter contacted Saps Search and Rescue Unit to retrieve the body which was about 55m below the bridge.

The body was retrieved and found to be in a state of decomposition. It was then taken to Park Rynie Mortuary for further investigation.

Police stated that the unknown man was dressed in a black track pants and black hoodie. He appears to be about 30-years-old and was slightly heavy in built.

If anyone is able to identify the man or assist with this case, contact 039 9789900.
