Police seize stolen gun in Danganya

Most of the serial numbers on the firearm had been filed off.

Umkomaas Saps members have been commended for a recent arrest and recovery of a firearm in their policing precinct.

These Crime Prevention Relief B members acted on information received on June 8 at about 22:00, after the lawful owner of the firearm was robbed.

They followed up on intelligence received, proceeded to Danganya, and located the identified man. During a search, members recovered a black Glock pistol with three rounds of live ammunition, which was found on the man.

Most of the serial numbers on the firearm had been filed off, but members were still able to conduct a meticulous inspection and identify a remaining serial number. This confirmed that the firearm was linked to an Umkomaas case.

The man was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. He was subsequently detained at Umkomaas Saps and is expected to appear in court this week.

The firearm and ammunition were processed and secured in accordance with forensic procedures.

The eThekwini District Commissioner, Major General Makhosazana Victoria Kheswa, and the management of eThekwini District Saps have commended these members and said their commitment to removing illegal firearms from communities demonstrates the determination of Saps members to combat violent crime and ensure safer communities.

“The recovery of illegal firearms remains a priority, as every firearm removed from the hands of criminals contributes significantly to saving lives and reducing violent crime,” added Kheswa.
