Victims identified in fatal Braemar horror crash
It is believed that the victims were on their way back home to Umlazi after a function.
Five people died after a motor vehicle accident on the R612, Braemar near KwaDumisa, Umzinto towards Ixopo on July 18.
Ugu District police stated that a case of culpable homicide including reckless and negligent driving was opened for investigation.
Reports indicate that a white VW Polo left the road and allegedly overturned, and went down an embankment onto the R612.
This resulted in the death of Nombuso Silindile Mkhize (37), Nokwanda Asanda Dlamini (35), Sibusiso Ndlovu (31), Phindile Fortune Nkomo (39) and Nkosingiphile Ngcukane (31).
One passenger survived the crash and was transported to GJ Crookes Hospital in Scottburgh by EMRS for medical treatment. The survivor is now receiving patient care at Victoria Mxenge Hospital (King Edward VIII Hospital).
According to the families, the six occupants were couples who were visiting their families in the Khambiyane area of Dumisa. They attended a function called Umcimbi Wezinkomo, and the accident occurred on their way back home to Umlazi.
The MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, also commented on the matter.
“Based on the preliminary report from RTI and Saps, the driver, who died instantly, lost control on a downhill bend resulting in the vehicle leaving the roadway,” he said.
“It overturned and then came back onto the road and crashed into the road barriers. All occupants were thrown out of the vehicle and suffered severe injuries.”
Duma also mentioned that a weekend prior to this incident, another accident involving a VW Polo was reported in Newcastle where six people died.
A mass prayer and memorial service has since been held for the accident victims. This took place in Umlazi yesterday (July 23).
