Prize for young Umzinto scientist

Science fair director Pragasen Samuel thanked all stakeholders for making the event a success, as well as learners.

Umzinto learner Iviwe Chiliza was one of the many young scientists from KZN who had a chance to showcase their talents at the recent Eskom Expo for Young Scientists Southern KZN Regional Science Fairs.

Some 123 participants from 21 schools in the Ugu District presented 96 projects. These were evaluated by 40 judges at the science fair held at Creston College in Port Shepstone recently.

Iviwe from St Patrick’s Primary won an Eskom special award for best development and received Bluetooth wireless speakers with wireless chargers sponsored by the power utility.

Science fair director Pragasen Samuel thanked all stakeholders for making the event a success, as well as learners.

“Our society is faced with many challenges which look to science for answers. These young scientists had the responsibility of finding solutions to these challenges, as seen in many of their extraordinary projects at these regional science fairs,” he said.

The acting CEO of the Eskom Development Foundation, Mologadi Motshele, added that the expo strives to inspire young minds to explore their passion for science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI).

“By providing opportunities to develop their passion and enhance their knowledge, the expo plays a crucial role in shaping future leaders in these fields.”

“We congratulate all the young scientists and researchers who participated in this year’s science fairs. Your dedication and innovative spirit are truly commendable.”

Participants at the event held in Ugu were pre-selected after taking part in various expo activities, including workshops, research and innovation camps and district expos.
