Biker dies at race event

Two bikers sustained life-threatening injuries on race day.

The biking community and members of Motorsport South Africa are mourning the death of competitive biker Himesh Hansjee (43) at Dezzi Raceway on November 9.

At the time, Hansjee from Durban was taking part in the KZN Road Racing Club Championship and Motorcycle Endurance Race.

Glen Preston of Med-Evac said a medical crew was on duty at the event when two bikers crashed into each other.

“Both bikers sustained life-threatening injuries. We activated the Netcare 911 helicopter to transport Hansjee to a Durban hospital; unfortunately, he died the next morning,” he said.

The other biker was transported by ambulance to hospital.

Muhammad Adam, the spokesperson of Dezzi Raceway, said they are deeply saddened by the tragedy.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Himesh. Motorsport is a passion that brings us together, but moments like these remind us of the inherent risks and the bravery of those involved. We extend our sincere condolences to all those affected and stand in support of the motorsport community during this difficult time,” he said.

Motorsport South Africa also released a statement: “We are heartbroken by the tragic incident. As we mourn this profound loss, we take comfort in knowing that Himesh was doing what he loved. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, friends and the racing community during this difficult time.”
