Siyakwazi hosts awareness events

Disability can result from a range of impairments, including physical, cognitive, mental, sensory, emotional, or developmental.

What was your first encounter with disability? This thoughtful question set the tone for Siyakwazi’s recent community awareness events. Throughout Disability Rights Awareness Month, Siyakwazi – a local community-based NPO supporting children with disabilities – has invited individuals to share experiences, challenge assumptions, and explore ways to build a more inclusive society, all while enjoying festive shopping ahead of the holiday season.

Events held last week and the week prior in Port Edward, Gcilima, Woza, KwaLatshoda, and Nkoneni were a resounding success. Despite the rain, community spirit remained high as families gathered to shop, children received free Bookdash storybooks, played hopscotch and skipping, and, as is tradition with Siyakwazi’s outreach team, joined in singing and dancing that drew the attention of passers-by. Proceeds from these sales support Siyakwazi’s essential programmes for children with disabilities in under-resourced areas near Munster.

“We want to make disability awareness something people talk about every day,” says Siyakwazi inclusion coordinator Mpume Somana. “These gatherings aren’t just about raising funds – they’re about creating a space where everyone can feel welcome, learn from each other, and support a community that includes all abilities.”

Local businesses have joined Siyakwazi’s call for action. The Beekman Group provided eye-catching branded T-shirts, while The Courier Guy transported clothing donated by Durban-based Clothes 2 Good, with items available for purchase at events and Siyakwazi’s permanent shop in KwaNzimakwe.

During Disability Rights Awareness Month, Siyakwazi encourages South Coasters to champion inclusion, empathy, and accessibility, taking steps toward a society that values diversity and equal opportunities. If you would like to donate clothing for future sales, please contact Mata on 073 9430876. * South Africa observes National Disability Rights Awareness Month each year from November 3 to December 3. The month culminates on December 3, which marks both the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and National Disability Rights Awareness Day.

Disability can result from a range of impairments, including physical, cognitive, mental, sensory, emotional, or developmental, and may be present from birth or acquired later in life. Disability Rights Awareness Month serves as a crucial opportunity for everyone to take action in breaking down barriers and improving the quality of life for people with disabilities through meaningful, concrete efforts.
