Mayor conducts town inspection

After the inspection, the mayor and team met with community members in Scott Street.

Umdoni mayor Mbali Cele-Luthuli conducted an inspection of Scottburgh last week, ahead of the festive season.

She was joined by senior management, Exco members and councillors to ensure that all is in order in Umdoni’s economic hub.

During the walkabout, the mayor interacted with individuals and business folk to hear their thoughts on service delivery. Many have noticed the efforts of rebuilding the community but also pointed out several matters such as damaged pavements, vagrants overrunning the town and harassing people for money, dysfunctional traffic lights and ablution facilities that aren’t up to par.

Public ablution blocks were visited as well.

Senior managers from the relevant departments did take note of these matters to address them.

After the inspection, Cele-Luthuli met with community members in Scott Street.

“Various service delivery improvement activities are underway, not just in preparation for the festive season, but also to have a well-functioning town beyond this period. Our waste collection services have also been hindered numerous times, but this did not deter us from ensuring we move back on track and deliver this service.”

She also mentioned that work is being done to ensure streetlights are functioning and pothole patching and road rehabilitation are being done.

“It is evident that hard work is going into rebuilding the town to transform it back into the jewel of the South Coast. While a fish cannot be congratulated for swimming because that is what it is expected to do, we are pleased to learn that our town will once again be loved and appreciated as a result of good services.”

The public was also advised to be cautious when driving around this time of year as there will be an influx of visitors and vehicles on the roads.

“Be mindful of pedestrians and refrain from drinking and driving,” said the mayor.
