Albersville residents roll up sleeves to pick up rubbish

Uncollected garbage is now a health hazard in most areas, but not so in Albersville as the ratepayers' association is cleaning up.

Garbage has been piling up in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) due to a three-week-long strike by municipal staff, and there seems to be no end to it.

Among other service issues, the strike has resulted in bags of uncollected waste and illegal dumping sites across RNM, while property owners are subjected to overflowing bins in their yards.

The Albersville Ratepayers’ Association (ARA) is concerned about uncollected refuse on their roads, as well as piles of bin bags outside many homes.

More so, it is becoming a health hazard, with the foul smell, maggots, flies and the possibility of a rodent infestation.

Sal Musa from ARA said the association’s executives had rallied members and have been actively working since Tuesday this week to make refuse collection a possibility.

“We’ve worked out almost all logistics for this operation, which includes Albersville, lower Albersville, Palmview, White City and Protea Park. We are grateful to a Good Samaritan for the hire of his truck to collect and dump the refuse. The refuse pick-up started yesterday (Wednesday) and will continue until the above areas are completed,” said Musa.

ARA has also employed seven workers to load the refuse, which will be dumped at the Oatlands Landfill Site.

It intends to cover all areas in Albersville. If anyone is willing to assist with donations of gloves/disposable attire for the workers and other costs, contact Sal Musa on 083 5015094.
