OPINION: Alternate route ‘dog gone’ hairy ride

The twisting Sugar Mill Road is another hazard.

I simply have to share this information with all who may be needing to use the Rethman Drive alternative at Umtentweni.

I needed to get our dog to the vet yesterday for an ultrasound test having been referred by the vet in Hibberdene, who also provided guidance on the alternative route without having to use the toll road.

This alternative route is next to the toll road, called Sugar Mill Road, which, after a nerve-wracking drive with cars overtaking on double lines in Rethman Drive, is the first left after the toll road turnoff – also busy at 09:30!

The twisting Sugar Mill Road is another hazard – many bends with motorists doing as they please. In fact, I had my hazard lights on.

Fortunately, our dog in the front passenger seat had her own safety belt tied in as, just before the Fish on the River restaurant, speed bumps reared their ugly, non-painted heads.

My brakes, thanks be, saved me from hitting them at 60km/h. Doggie would have flown into the dashboard, but the belt saved her.

Five unpainted black, high speed bumps – come on!

So folks, please take care if the toll road is too costly for your daily travels to Port Shepstone and back home northward.
